Bigastro (in Valencian, Bigastre) is a municipality in the Valencian Community, Spain. It is located in the South the Province of Alicante, in the comarca of Vega Baja del Segura. 6.744 Inhabitants (2009).
At the time of its foundation, agriculture was important in Bigastro especially flax and hemp, in the 19th century, the decline of the textile sector made it turn to citrus fruits and garden products, also rain-fed agriculture. There are also industrial activity in Bigastro in the construction and manufacturing sectors.
In the year 2009, Bigastro had 6,744 people. In 2007 the population foreign nationality was 17.5 per cent of which most are of British nationality.
Bigastro is on the CV-95 between the towns of Orihuela and San Miguel de Salinas.
We often pass through Bigastro on our way to Orihuela though unfortunately I have never stopped to take a photo, so I cannot post one here, the above brief guide was roughly translated from the Bigastro wikipedia page (spanish version) so it might not make much sense. Next time I go through Bigastro I will definately take a photo (though it is not the most attractive place we have been to).
