Elche Spain

Elche Spain: Above is a picture of the Altamira palace in the centre of Elche, a city which is close to Alicante on the Costa Blanca, Spain. Elche is well known for its palm tree forest originally planted by the Phoenicians. The Altamira Palace shown in the picture was built in the late 15th century by Gutierrez de Cardenas a Castilian nobleman, on top of an earlier Moorish fortress. Also worth a visit in Elche is the Basilica de Santa Maria and the Huerto del Cura.
We have visited Elche several times over the years and particularly enjoyed the Huerto del Cura gardens where there are many varieties of palm and a pretty cactus garden. We also climbed the tower of the Basilica de Santa Maria from where we got amazing views over the city and palm forest.
